B Mitchell Reed KMET FM Part Two

***A note to air check traders. Please do not record these air checks and try and trade. I have the original tapes many of which I recorded myself and thus the authenticity can not be in doubt and can be easily traced.

Three hours plus of B Mitchell Reed on KMET from June 10, 1975. The station may have been past it’s prime but the creativity and irreverence is still apparent.

Most of the music played is from the  “Johnson Years.“ Now I know where KOME FM got their idea for the LBJ years.

You will hear an interesting and recurrent station ID using a bit from the Firesign Theater. A diverse set of music particularly on the third clip where you will hear The Rainy Daze, Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks, Count Basie and more.  BMR at one point asks listeners to tune in to a competing radio station. Listen to Shadoe Steven`s reaction to that as he takes over near the end of the third clip.

More to come from KMET and other L.A. stations. Watch this space.

  1. This is gold.
    Thank YOU so, so much.
I grew up with KPPC, KMET and KABC (which turned into KLOS) and miss it dearly.
Over the years I have found some and am always on the lookout for more.
Need to figure out how to archive it. I don’t want it to disappear.

  2. Reed was hosting an underground show on KFWB AM at night before he moved to KPPC and KMET.
He played Interstellar Overdrive, which blew my 15 year old mind. KBLA-AM had the same policy; Top 40 during the day, and Dave Diamond and the Diamond Mine playing freeform music at night.
    Some of my favorite tunes that BMR would play once he was on KMET were;
Christo Redemptor by Charlie Musselwhite (long version)
49 Bye-Byes by The Frozen Noses (Stills and Croz)(demo)
Bluebird by Buffalo Springfield (long version)
    He also loved Moby Grape.

  3. This was one of the most special times in my life. I am almost 70 and I remember all of this, especially BMR and Steven Clean’s rubber ducky. Thanks for sharing! Relocated to Boise in 1975.

  4. Growing up in Needles, CA, we didn’t have much radio. I worked at our 1000 watt AM station as a squeaky-voiced DJ when I was in high school. The boss would NOT let us play anything current (we got all the demos and took them home). When I got out of the Army in ’71 and moved to Long Beach I discovered FM and KMET. BMR and Steven Clean were the voices of my youth. So cool to get to put these clips on and just drift back to those days before the program directors and robot radio. I discovered so much more and bought so many more LPs than I might have had KMET and even KNAC not been “Deep-cut” stations and the DJs were able to play what they wanted
Thanks so much for then and now.
