KLSX FM Los Angeles Early’s 90’s

I could not find much information about the short lived KLSX FM Classic Rock in Los Angeles but I have a Maxell reel to reel tape with the above recording. Mostly a music block with no DJ’s but some station promos and commercials are included.

The good news is that there is not a single track on the tape of the homogenized AOR that dominates classic rock today and I think I have a physical  copy of every track played except for one or two.

Nice to hear prog rock groups such as the Moody Blues, Yes and ELP even if it’s their hits.  Also Baby You’re a Rich Man by the Beatles probably does not get much play on the radio today.

The Inner Light by the Beatles is not on the air check but it’s flip side Lady Madonna is.

  1. Hi, Javed!

No idea how I missed this post for more than a year, but I can fill in a few gaps for you.

KLSX was at 97.1 in Los Angeles and had a pretty good run as a Classic Rock station…almost nine years from September 1986 to July 1995.

It was the first L.A. station in the format (KLOS and KMET were still playing then-current album rock, with KMET becoming New Age KTWV in February of 1987).

As you note, they had a deep-library, and promoted no-repeat workdays.

In 1991, they added the Howard Stern show in mornings, and in 1995, went all so-called “Hot Talk”. They added Tom Leykis’ show the following year.

The frequency has a long history dating back to 1954, but until it began simulcasting All-News KNX-AM in 2021, its only major success was as KLSX.
